Mobile data services stopped working in central Delhi on the evening of 23 July after authorities ordered operators to suspend access amid student protests.
Government agencies and the major operators Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea had not commented on the decision by the time of publication. The restriction affected residents and businesses as well as demonstrators.
Shop and restaurant owners said they were unable to accept online payments. This became one of the most immediate practical effects of the communications shutdown in the Indian capital.
The protests began after university entrance examination papers were leaked in May. The scandal affected about two million students, and demonstrators are demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Students and activists have maintained camps in central Delhi since June. The government did not publicly explain the mobile internet restriction, leaving its precise duration and geographic scope unclear.
