As of July 12, the Borno State health ministry in Nigeria had reported more than 35,500 suspected cholera cases and 198 deaths.
The outbreak began in May. By the same cutoff, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) had treated more than 24,000 patients with suspected cholera; over a quarter of those admitted were in severe condition.
The release said the response network included two specialised cholera treatment centres, five treatment units and 17 oral rehydration points.
MSF said response capacity was not keeping pace with the increase in suspected cases. It identified shortages of clean drinking water, poor sanitation and limited access to healthcare as factors complicating the situation.
