Hajime Moriyasu will remain head coach of Japan through the end of the 2027 Asian Cup, the Japan Football Association (JFA) announced.
The continental tournament in Saudi Arabia will run from 7 January to 5 February 2027. The current coach will therefore step down after Asia’s main national-team competition.
Go Oiwa will succeed Moriyasu. He will take charge of the senior side from its friendly matches in March 2027, with his term running through the end of the 2030 World Cup.
Oiwa currently coaches Japan’s under-21 team. After taking the senior job, he will combine the role with preparing the Olympic team for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
The JFA said announcing the transition in advance was intended to provide continuity between the youth and senior teams. Oiwa will continue with the U-21 side until March 2027, while Moriyasu focuses on the Asian Cup.
